October 2008, 2 and a bit months to go... Email Update #08

Quick important updates.

MAIN VENUE

The new main venue for NCYC09 is now Methodist Ladies College (MLC), Melbourne. "MLC has superb facilities for the worships and whole convention gatherings, wonderful spaces for the festival, Bible studies, electives, nightlife, and chill out time," said Convention Coordinator Rohan Pryor. MLC is a large Uniting Church school just 15 minutes east of Melbourne's city centre.

"It'll provide an outstanding space for everything we want to do during the week, and will really help to build a sense of Christian community," said Rohan.

"New restrictions arose around the State Netball Hockey Centre (SNHC), which meant that we had to make this decision," he said.

MLC is a short bus ride from all of the accommodation venues, and is easily accessed by public transport. MLC is located on the corner of Glenferrie and Barkers Road, Kew.

"The amazing program for the week of convention is all set," said Rohan. "Shane Claiborne, Amie Dural and Robyn Whitaker can't wait to speak from the main stage. Scat, Simeon, 2-11, Raize, and the NCYC band are ready to rock out, our Submersions day in the middle of convention will be an incredible day of action in the heart of Melbourne, the Festival will be amazing."

Why the change of venue?

NCYC09 organisers were advised in late September of new restrictions put in place by those who manage the parkland where much of NCYC09 was to be based. "We were no longer going to be able to use the grassland around SNHC because of the continuing drought, and we were no longer allowed to play amplified music outdoors," said Rohan.

Chair of the NCYC09 Management Committee, Rev Kerrie Lingham said that once that news came through, they had to have a serious look at the alternative venue - MLC. "The new restrictions on the parklands, the suitability of MLC as a venue for NCYC, and the reality that MLC (being a Uniting Church facility) is less expensive than SNHC, meant that changing the venue was the responsible decision to make", said Kerrie.

NCYC09 will be an unforgettable week - a chance to meet thousands of young people from all over Australia and abroad, and to grow as followers of Christ. The seating capacity at MLC is a bit smaller than it was for SNHC, so if you haven't already registered, don't miss out. It could change your life! And don't forget to encourage a friend, niece, nephew, cousin, grandchild, neighbour to register!
