January 2008, 12 months to go... Email Update #2

Welcome to the second email from NCYC09! Yes, it has been a while since you’ve heard from us, but we’re here to make it up to you and start the year with information overload!

ONE YEAR TO GO!

That’s right, in just under one year’s time, NCYC09 will be live and loud! From Saturday 3 January 2009, bands, speakers and thousands of delegates will all be worshipping, doing bible studies, and generally hanging out for possibly the greatest seven days since Genesis. We’re madly organising it all now – have you started your fundraising and travel planning?

WHERE DID YOU SAY IT WAS?

In case you haven’t caught up with the latest, it’s all official: NCYC09 is going to be held in Melbourne! It’ll be the first time NCYC has been held in Melbourne since 1963 – that’s 46 years! We’re also stoked about our main venue, the State Netball Hockey Centre. It’s a big stadium surrounded by heaps of parkland – it’s going to be brilliant. So you can start planning your bus tours/train trips/flights/dinner cruises/hot air balloons to descend on Melbourne in January 2009.

AND INTRODUCING...

We’re thrilled to announce that Shane Claiborne will be one of the keynote speakers at NCYC09.

Shane is an amazing young speaker from the USA, and is a founding member of ‘The Simple Way’, a Christian community based in urban Philadelphia that works to change the world with ‘one loving act at a time’. The ability to speak about his 'ordinary radical' outlook on life and faith in a relaxed and easygoing way makes Shane a fascinating and thought-provoking speaker.

NCYC09 will feature Shane and other international and Australian speakers, as well as a few local ‘up and comers’ - young people with amazing stories to tell.

You can find out more about Shane and The Simple Way community at www.thesimpleway.org/shane.

REGISTRATION

Yes, you can register as a delegate to attend NCYC09! We’ve already had over 150 registrations in the short time they’ve been open, so now it’s your turn to jump on the best bandwagon in town and register.

Bulk regos can be organised through the NCYC Office.

You can still check out ncyc.org.au/registration-finally to see what more you can do, in addition to being a delegate.  Let us know if you're interested in being a small group leader, an adult volunteer, or to receive more detailed rego info. Check it out – this is a pretty important part of making the whole event happen.

We know everyone likes to leave registration to the last minute, but you really should register soon so we can make sure we’re ready for you – and also the registration fees go up from 15 May 2008.

If you registered at NCYC07 in Perth, just hang tight and we’ll be in touch shortly with an online access key so you can update your details.

It’s all online – check out ncyc.org.au/registration-finally

SEND US YOUR BEAT

The time has arrived and NCYC09 is now taking music submissions online!

NCYC09 invites you and anyone that you know to get creative and start writing music for Converge.

Music has always been an big part of NCYC – delegates love seeing their favourite bands live and it’s a great way for up-and-coming musicians to have their music heard by a national (possibly even international) audience.

We’re looking for a diverse range of musical genres. Whether you like to rock in big auditoriums or play it easy in small café-style venues, we want to hear what you’ve got.

For more information about music submissions, requirements and guidelines please visit ncyc.org.au/music. If you have any general enquiries please contact music@ncyc.org.au or call 1300 00 NCYC

So stop reading and get creating! Remember, submissions close 29 February 2008.

PROMO BOOKLET

The NCYC printers have been running hot with our latest epic publication, a booklet stuffed full of information and tidbits about NCYC09. The booklet is also designed in a 99% photocopy-able way, so you can easily photocopy the most exciting pages and stick them up everywhere. The booklet has been posted to churches and ministers around the country, but if you can’t wait for the mail to arrive, then jump online at ncyc.org.au/downloads to download the different flyers and print off as you see fit.

If you want to be on the mailing list for future publications from NCYC09, jump online at ncyc.org.au and fill out the expression of interest form (or just register!)

ABBBQ

There’s nothing quite as Australian as a barbeque, and so NCYC is organizing the biggest one in the country – creatively called Australia’s Biggest BBQ (ABBBQ).

Everyone around Australia is invited to hold a BBQ at their local venue on (or around) Sunday 4 May, 2008. And by everyone, we mean everyone – Uniting Church congregations, congregations from other denominations, UnitingCare agencies, schools, KUCA clubs, UCAF groups, you name it.

The BBQ could even happen before or after worship that day. It will be a great way for your group to share stories about NCYCs they’ve attended in the past, watch a short promo DVD to hear all the news about NCYC09, pray for the event, and raise a few dollars for your own delegates or disadvantaged delegates.

Check out the ABBBQ flyer for more info and to register your event.

INTERNSHIPS

NCYC09 is conducting an internship program during 2008, as part of its ongoing ministry to build leaders beyond the week of convention.

The internship program is looking for congregations to contribute to this development of youth ministry by funding an intern to work at least two days a week for the NCYC office, and for their local congregation or context. Some interns who are under 25 years old and do not have any previous qualifications may also have an opportunity to receive government funding while working towards a Certificate III in Youth Work.

The program is a cooperative approach for congregations to support the largest national event of the Uniting Church, while also having an additional person working for the congregation. Tasks for interns while working on NCYC09 will vary from processing registration, through to promotion, music, administration, pastoral care and more.

If you or your congregation is interested in being or supporting an intern please contact Kim Anderson on 1300 00 NCYC (6292), checkout the website or email kim@ncyc.org.au

DID SOMEONE SAY LIVE RECORDING CONCERT?

Saturday 28 June, 2008. 2pm
Glen Waverley Uniting Church,
Cnr. Kingsway & Bogong Ave, Glen Waverley, VIC.

Hear all the NCYC09 music at the live concert, where we’ll be recording the official album! Learn the music, listen to the lyrics, then mix it up with the artists and audience to create the live music album and video experience. And it’s a pretty good taster of what you’ll get at NCYC09!

PODCASTS + BLOGS

Don’t forget about the running commentary on NCYC09 on the website, in the form of blogs and “Good Newsy” - the official podcast!

There are blogs from the Convention Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator, the Order of St Stephen worker, the Design Team, and there is also a Prayer Network update.  Good Newsy is just two crazy victas boys and a video camera, and features special guests, reviews of past NCYC events and most importantly updates on NCYC09. You can view the podcast by logging on to ncyc.org.au/podcast, or you can even subscribe through iTunes.

GET BRANDED

Check out the very cool NCYC09 merchandise that you can get your hands on at ncyc.org.au/shop. Tshirts, caps and dogtags are all there, in a variety of colours and designs, just waiting to be owned by you. Expect even more merchandise options early in 2008.

Bling up your outfit, make a social comment, use it for product placement in that Hollywood movie you’re making – the uses of NCYC09 merchandise are endless. You should probably buy one of each new design, you know, just in case one becomes valuable in 20 years…

SPREAD THE WORD

The more people who come to NCYC09, the more we can share the love! If a mate has sent this to you, you can subscribe by just putting in your email address at ncyc.org.au - and if you haven't forwarded this email to anyone, you should! Email or txt it to all your buddies, link to the website from your MySpace or Facebook, advertise it in your msn name… you get the idea.
